What is Main Street?

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) designated Stephenville as a Texas Main Street community in 2021. The Texas Main Street program is part of the Community Heritage Development Division of the THC and focuses on the Four Point Approach of organization, economic development, design, and promotion with community involvement and volunteer support. Stephenville Historic Main Street is among the national network of more than 1,200 neighborhoods and communities that share both a commitment to creating high-quality places and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development. Our beautiful historic downtown district is also included in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Four Point Approach

Grant Opportunities for Businesses within the Historic Main Street

Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credits: The Federal Historic Preservation Tax Credit program offers a 20 percent income tax credit for the rehabilitation of historic, income-producing buildings.

Texas Historic Preservation Tax Credit Program: The state tax credit program offers a 25 percent tax credit for the rehabilitation of historic, income-producing or non-profit use buildings. This credit can be sold, and may be used against Texas Business Franchise Tax OR Texas Insurance Premium Tax.

Facde Improvement Grant: Stephenville employs the Facade Improvement Grant program as a prominent incentive, aiming to enhance the visual appeal and economic vibrancy of the city by promoting exterior improvements to commercial, retail, and office structures. The objective is to enhance safety, and create a more aesthetically pleasing environment for both community residents and visitors. The improvements initiated by existing businesses have the potential to serve as a catalyst for broad revitalization efforts throughout the community. For more information on how to apply for a Facade Improvement Grant, please contact the Stephenville Economic Development Authority Office.

At the center of our beautiful downtown is the Erath County Courthouse. Constructed in 1892, it is the work of architect, James Riely Gordon. It features a striking polychromatic exterior of native white limestone with red Pecos sandstone accents and, as one of Gordon’s earlier works; it displays several features that have become hallmarks of his courthouse designs.

The amazing district contains over 23 full city blocks surrounding the 1892 Erath County Courthouse. Our remarkable downtown square boasts streets paved with Thurber bricks during the 1920s. Filled with a variety of shops and restaurants, this notable destination is a year-round delight.

We invite you to come visit us and see all of the many historic treasures in our Main Street district!
