Sports Official - Part-time

Reports to: Recreation Supervisor 

Department: Parks & Leisure 

Hourly Rate:  $15.00 Per Game
 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts as Umpire or Referee in various competitive athletic and sporting events

  • Determines validity of plays, goals, finish line order, or out-of-bound plays

  • Observes the actions of participants to detect infractions of rules

  • Resolves disputable matters and claims of rule infractions

  • Decides penalties according to established game rules and regulations

  • May keep score, clock, and/or record time

  • Confers with other officials, referees, or staff to verify observation of plays

  • Promotes good sportsmanship

  • Carries out a continuous effort to improve operations, work processes; and works cooperatively and jointly to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Officials must be 18 years old

  • Must have reliable transportation

  • Knowledge of the rules of play for various sports activities

  • Ability to act swiftly and make judgments without partiality

  • Skill in problem-solving and decision-making

  • Skill and dexterity in handling sports-related equipment

  • Skill in oral and written communication

  • Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent

  • Experienced to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions and to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to two years of experience

  • Employees will be provided training throughout the season

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is performed on the playing field or gymnasium. The employee will constantly keep up with the pace of the game by running up and down the court or field as needed. The employee must have a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color. The work is typically performed in athletic facilities or outdoors. The employee may be exposed to cold or inclement weather, noise, dust, or dirt.
