 THE STEPHENVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE POSITION OF FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies, and other emergency calls to protect life and property; operate and maintain a variety of fire, EMS, and rescue equipment. Participate in firefighting activities, emergency medical services, hazardous materials incidents, fire prevention, and training activities.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITY

Must be 18 yrs. or older. High School Diploma or GED required.

Basic Firefighter certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection or training hours for certification required. Texas Department of Health EMT Basic certification required, Paramedic preferred

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license, and currently have and maintain a satisfactory driving record
  • Must pass a background investigation and drug test

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Walking, crouching, or crawling during emergency operations
  • Climbing stairs/ladders
  • Transporting equipment and injured/deceased persons
  • Walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Lifting, dragging, carrying, or pushing heavy equipment
  • Performing life-saving and rescue procedures
  • Operating assigned equipment

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Respond quickly to changing emergency situations under stress
  • Climb ladders and work at heights, and learn the use of tools and equipment used in fire suppression work
  •  Perform limited mechanical work involved in maintaining fire and ambulance equipment
  • Learn to analyze fire and emergency situations and adopt effective courses of action
  • Properly operate and maintain radio equipment
  • Perform heavy lifting and physical maneuvering
  • Apply the principles, practices, and procedures of modern firefighting
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Learn the principles, practices, and procedures of handling hazardous materials
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Learn local geography including the location of streets, water mains and hydrants, and the major fire hazards of the City
