Permit Questions
The best way to find out if you need a permit is to contact the Building Official before you begin construction. His name is Robert Turk and he can be reached at (254) 918-1214 or rturk@stephenvilletx.gov. If a permit is not needed, he can answer your construction questions and may be able to provide valuable advice.
Please go to our website, click on the Certificate of Occupancy form and submit it through the online portal or email it to permits@stephenvilletx.gov. Once your application is received and reviewed, an inspection will be required from various departments such as building and fire. Once inspections are done and the Fire Marshal issues a load and occupancy for the business, a CO will be issued.
An application will need to be completed before a permit can/will be issued. Please submit online via our portal, click here --> Citizen Requests-Permit - Stephenville.
A building permit gives you legal right to start construction of a project in accordance with approved drawings and specifications.
Permit applications may be submitted to the Permit Technician via email at permits@stephenvilletx.gov. The Building Official will review your plans and determine if your project is in compliance with city codes. If your plans meet these requirements, a fee will be assessed and a payment link will be sent to you via email. Once the all the reviews have been completed and approved and fees paid, a permit will be issued. The building permit is a combination permit, with the exception of sign permits as well as separate electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits.
On-site inspections will be required to make certain the work conforms to the permit and city codes. The Building Inspector will let you know approximately how many inspections may be needed for your project. In most cases inspections can be completed the same day as requested. Please call 254-918-1224 or email your inspection requests to permits@stephenvilletx.gov. Please do not call the Building Inspector directly for an inspection, they must come through the permit office.
Other services provided by the Development Services Department include the issuing of sign permits, Food Service Permits, Certificates of Occupancy and trade permits. If you should have any questions concerning your project plans and/or determining what kind of permit(s) you are required, please call or email the Permits Department at 254-918-1224 or permits@stephenvilletx.gov.
Your home or business is an investment. If your construction project does not comply with the codes adopted by the city, the value of your investment could be reduced. Property insurers may not cover work done without permits and inspections. If you decide to sell a home or building that has had modifications without a permit, you may be required to tear down the addition, leave it unoccupied or do costly repairs.
A property owner who can show that code requirements were strictly and consistently met, as demonstrated by the Building Inspector’s carefully maintained records, has a strong ally if something happens to trigger a potentially destructive lawsuit. Your permit also allows the code official to protect the public by reducing the potential hazards of unsafe construction and ensuring public health, safety and welfare. By following code guidelines, your competed project will meet minimum standards of safety and will be less likely to cause injury to you, your family, your friends, or future owners.
