Water Plant Operator - Full-Time
Department: Public Works – Water Department
Reports To: Water Production Supervisor
FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
Salary: $14.57 to $19.52 hourly
JOB SUMMARY:
The City of Stephenville is seeking a full-time Water Plant Operator. This role requires skilled work in the operation of water pumping, purification, and related equipment on an assigned shift. Work involves responsibility for the operation of water pumping, purification, and related equipment, and for making minor repairs and adjustments to equipment as required. Work includes inspection and operation of electrical control boards, motors, pumps, meters, and related equipment. Specific, detailed guidelines covering all important aspects of the assignment are provided to the employee either verbally or in writing. The employee is required to work in strict adherence to the guidelines and the supervisor must authorize any substantive deviation. Limited or no contact with the public in situations that affect the job or task-at-hand and the public view of the organization as a whole. Daily contact with city employees, the general public, state and local officials.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Checks and inspects all water wells, pump stations, lift stations, and related equipment for proper operations.

Controls pressure and flow of water in the distribution system; maintains water pressure; operates, oils, and adjusts pumps and machinery, records pertinent information.

Maintains equipment, buildings, and ground in a clean and orderly manner and performs minor repairs on equipment as required.

Starts and stops pumps; regulates valves and observes flow dials; keeps a daily log of shift operations; reads gauges and records information shown.

Collects samples of potable water for bacteriological and chemical; adds chemicals to the water system by prescribed standards.

Orders materials and supplies for operations and maintenance as required.

Will work on-call duty as required by supervisor.

Performs related work as required.
POSITION SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Learn to inspect water plant machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects in operation.

Learn to operate efficiently and safely all equipment and machinery used.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Learn the processes involved in the pumping and purification of water, including some chemical tests.

Read meters and charts accurately and maintain routine records of shift operations.

Ability to operate a City vehicle.

Follows and enforces all other City ordinances as needed.

Acts on complaints from citizens and elected officials.

Inspects assigned equipment for proper operation; operates equipment as required to fulfill job duties.

Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.

Implement a comprehensive and effective maintenance and repair program.

Maintain a good relationship with the public and other City departments.

Calculate contents of chemical solutions and analyze results of tests.

Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.

Prepare clear and concise reports.

REQUIREMENTS:
-
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
-
Minimum of five years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of water pumping and purification equipment.
-
Possession of, or ability to obtain, appropriate, valid water and/or wastewater license.
-
Must acquire a class C groundwater license within 6 months of hire.
-
Must possess a valid CDL Texas Driver’s License and have a good driving record.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Must be authorized to work in the United States
-
Must have a valid Texas driver’s license, have and maintain a satisfactory driving record.

Degree from a high school or GED with two (2) years of increasingly responsible administrative experience or general clerical work or related field.

Must possess Permit Technician Certification from the International Code Council or be able to obtain certification within the first 12 months of employment.

Skilled in modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers, printers, calculators, and other office equipment.

Computer proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook applications & Adobe

Communicate, understand, and follow written and oral instructions.

Experience with a substantial amount of public contact and interaction
-
Ability to communicate courteously and effectively
-
Working knowledge of construction terminology
-
Bilingual skills are a plus but not required
-
Establish & maintain cooperative working relationships with all contacted in the course of work.
