Heavy Equipment Operator – Utilities – Full-Time

Reports To: Utilities Superintendent
Salary Range: $39,562 - $48,415
JOB SUMMARY
Perform a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of city utility equipment and facilities as assigned. Position works under the direction of a Crew Leader & the Utilities Superintendent.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Typical Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Participates in maintenance crews performing various construction and maintenance activities in utility infrastructure utilizing, equipment, materials, and tools required to complete work orders.

Participates in the maintenance and repairs of all equipment and ensures equipment is in safe and proper working order; Reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor.

Participate in repairing water and wastewater mains and services; break apart paved surfaces in preparation of line excavation; install shoring devices for excavations to prevent cave in of dirt; clamp off broken main or line and mowing and edging of facilities.

Clean manholes; participate in constructing and rebuilding manholes; assist in installing and repairing fire hydrants.

Participate in testing water and wastewater lines for leaks; inspect valves for operability; locate water and wastewater lines and connections; lay and extend new water and wastewater lines in preparation for future use; remove obstructions from wastewater lines.

Assist in repairing and reading water meters and water and wastewater services; repair and install service taps; flush water lines.

Pull and install meters; replace meter boxes as necessary; install clean outs; raise and lower meters and manholes as necessary.

Clean streets and work area after repair work is completed; grade drainage channels to proper grade to enhance drainage; landscape City and residential property upon completion of repairs; clean and unclog wastewater lines.

Will work on-call duty and will respond to emergency call back as required by supervisor.

Assists in flagging traffic around work sites.

Operates light and heavy machinery such as shovel, rake, dump truck, loader, backhoe, etc. in accordance with all safety guidelines.

Responds to emergency maintenance requests during normal business hours and after hours when on call.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Must have knowledge of:

Applicable traffic laws, ordinances, & regulations in the operation of assigned equipment

Work hazards and proper safety precautions

Proper traffic control placement of warning signs and work barricades

Ability to:

Complete maintenance and repair work orders

Understand/communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Understand utility location marks

Work as a team member and follow the directions of the crew leader
-
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers/public

Maintain effective audio-visual ability and perception needed for:

Making observations and communicating with others

Operating assigned equipment

Maintain a physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

Walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
-
Lifting, carrying, and/or holding supplies / equipment, in excess of 100 lbs.

Climbing, squatting, and stooping in the performance of routine job tasks
-

Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to:
-
Extremes in hot and cold temperatures associated with working outdoors
-
Levels of extreme noise and mechanical and environmental hazards
-
Hazards associated with working in trenches

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
-
Must be a United States Citizen
-
Must hold a valid Texas driver’s license and have and maintain a satisfactory driving record
-
Ability to communicate (read, write, and speak) effectively in the English language
-
High School Diploma or GED required
-
Must be able to respond to emergency call back within 30 minutes or as needed by department
-
A Texas State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment
-
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid water and/or wastewater license.

Must acquire class 1 wastewater collection and class C water distribution license within 3 years of hire.

Must pass a background investigation and drug screen
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Majority of work is performed outside in all types of weather including extreme heat and cold weather conditions.
