Public Works Crew Leader
Department: Public Works
Reports To: Utilities Superintendent
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Salary: $19.37 - $26.04 Hourly
JOB SUMMARY:
The Crew Leader for utilities oversees crews in the field and ensures the upkeep and care of water and wastewater systems. This is accomplished by maintaining and installing water and wastewater systems throughout the city and taking action to ensure water quality, training crews, and maintaining the safe and efficient operation of equipment.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Typical Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Repairs and maintains water and sewer systems by changing out and repairing lines, main breaks, and hydrants, unstopping mains, cleaning valves, removing debris, changing out meters, installing new parts and equipment, and inspecting lines using various types of tools and equipment in accordance with all safety guidelines
- Leads a maintenance crew by example as well as through scheduling work, documenting progress, training workers, and reviewing completed tasks
- Oversees a working crew, performing repairs, maintaining and installing of water and wastewater systems throughout the city
- Participates in the maintenance and repairs of all equipment and ensures equipment is in safe and proper working order; Reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor
- Serves as a back-up for other crew members and other crew leaders and remains cross-
- trained on the functions performed by those other crew leaders
- Operates major pieces of machinery and equipment
- Drives and maintains trucks
- Sets work priorities and sets up work projects
- Works with the public by responding to complaints and inquiries, and educates the public regarding the work being performed in their area
- Trains and mentors crew members in order to prepare them for performing all tasks and operating related machinery and equipment
- Responds to emergency maintenance requests during normal business hours and after hours when on call.
OTHER DUTIES MAY INCLUDE
- Assisting other departments and documenting completed work.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Requires minimum TCEQ Certification, “C” Water or “C” Wastewater Licenses, and Class “A” or “B” CDL Driver’s license.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Must have knowledge of:
- Applicable traffic laws, ordinances, & regulations in the operation of assigned equipment
- Work hazards and proper safety precautions
- Proper traffic control placement of warning signs and work barricades
- Ability to:
- Complete maintenance and repair work orders
- Understand/communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Understand utility location marks
- Work as a team member and follow the directions of the Utility Superintendent
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers/public
- Maintain effective audio-visual ability and perception needed for:
- Making observations and communicating with others
- Operating assigned equipment
- Maintain a physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
- Walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
- Lifting, carrying, and/or holding supplies / equipment, in excess of 100 lbs.
- Climbing, squatting, and stooping in the performance of routine job tasks
- Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to:
- Extremes in hot / cold temperatures and wind associated with working outdoors
- Levels of extreme noise and mechanical and environmental hazards
- Hazards associated with working in trenches
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be a United States Citizen
- Must hold a valid Texas driver’s license and have and maintain a satisfactory driving record
- Ability to communicate (read, write, and speak) effectively in the English language
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Must be able to respond to emergency call back within 30 minutes or as needed by the department
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid water and/or wastewater license.
- Must pass a background investigation and drug screen
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Majority of work is performed outside in all types of weather including extreme heat and cold weather conditions.
