Heavy Equipment Operator – Landfill – Full-Time

Department:  Public Works 
Reports To:  Landfill Superintendent
Hourly Range: $15.67 - $22.37

 

JOB SUMMARY

The City of Stephenville is seeking a full-time Heavy Equipment Operator. This position works forty 40 hours per week, 5 days per week; Tuesday through Saturday, reporting to the Landfill Superintendent working at Stephenville’s construction landfill.  Also, exercises no supervisory role.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs pre and post-operation inspections of equipment to ensure items such as fluids, filters, windows, lights, mirrors, and rearview camera (if applicable) are clean

  • Continuously monitors the condition of the equipment to ensure equipment is operationally ready at all times in order to minimize downtime; i.e. clean tracks, wheels, and/or belts on equipment, as needed

  • Performs and documents basic and minor maintenance and repair service on all equipment and ensures equipment is in safe and proper working order; Reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor

  • Answers questions and provides information to the public regarding landfill operations; investigates complaints and recommends corrective actions as necessary to resolve complaints

  • Continuously monitors deposited waste for evidence of unacceptable waste in deposited materials

  • Follows all required safety policies and procedures. Ensures safety apparel is worn at all times and that safety rules and regulations or practices are observed in the performance of all duties

  • Ensures the gatehouse area is clean and presentable to the public at the completion of each shift.

  • Assists in on-site directing of traffic

  • Operates scale software to weigh, charge, and process customers in and out of the facility

  • Operates other equipment and performs other duties as assigned

  • May assist in gathering information regarding equipment and supplies for budgetary purposes

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, and techniques used in the construction and maintenance of various public facilities

  • Applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations in the operation of assigned equipment

  • Modern Landfill practices and methods

  • Principles and procedures of record-keeping

  • Operation and maintenance requirements for heavy equipment

  • Work hazards and proper safety precautions

  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations

Ability to:

  • Operate and use a variety of machinery, vehicles, and equipment in the performance of duties

  • Determine the content of material entering the facility to properly invoice the customer

  • Accept or reject waste load based on content

  • Receive payment from customers; provide a receipt to customers

  • Understand and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

  • Maintain accurate records

  • Perform manual labor

  • Perform work in a hazardous environment and during inclement weather

  • Maintain effective audio-visual ability and perception needed for:

    • making observations; communicating with others; reading and writing; and operating assigned equipment including motor vehicles

  • Maintain a physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

    • walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time; lifting, carrying, and holding a variety of supplies and equipment, in excess of 100 lbs.; and climbing, squatting, and stooping in the performance of routine job tasks

  • Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to:

    • Extremes in hot and cold temperatures associated with working outdoors; levels of extreme noise; hazards associated with working in trenches; and mechanical and dust/mites hazards

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

  • Interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a United States Citizen

  • Must hold a valid Texas driver’s license and have and maintain a satisfactory driving record

  • Ability to communicate (read, write and speak) effectively in the English language

  • Formal or informal education or training ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

  • High School Diploma or GED required

  • Ability to communicate (read, write and speak) effectively in the English language

 Experience and Training Guidelines:

  • Experience in a previous position that required the handling of cash and balancing cash and/or receipts is preferred

  • Experience in an environment outside the home with computers and various basic software programs

  • Two (2) years of prior, related experience in heavy equipment operation

  • One (1) year of prior, related experience working at sites regulated by TCEQ
