JOB SUMMARY:
The City of Stephenville is seeking a full-time Public Works Crew Leader. This position leads and participates in the work of maintenance crews performing various construction and maintenance activities; to oversee equipment maintenance and repairs; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Incumbents are responsible for the operation of heavy-duty automotive equipment and construction machinery. Work involves the safe and efficient operation of bulldozers, track-type loaders, motor graders, backhoe/loaders, and similar machinery, which entails considerable manipulative difficulty in operation. Supervises and oversees a crew of personnel, ensuring safety and conformance to policies, procedures, and laws. Operation of assigned machinery and other work may be required. Under the supervision of the Public Works and Street Superintendent. When assigned to the Street Department - Reports to the Street Superintendent. When assigned to the Water/Wastewater Department - Reports directly to the Water/Wastewater Superintendent. Exercises direct supervision over equipment operation and maintenance staff. Responsible for the activities of the personnel directly supervising.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead, review, and participate in the work of staff involved in various field maintenance activities, repair, and construction work

Operate various machinery and equipment necessary in the performance of duties
-
Responsible for assigning jobs and coordinating activities of customer service employees
-
Oversee and participate in the maintenance and repair of all equipment and ensure that it is in safe and proper working order; Reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor.

Inspect work performed by crews; ensure that work is completed efficiently and according to standards; provide advice and assistance to assigned crew(s).

Ensure safety apparel is worn at all times and that safety rules and regulations or practices are observed in the performance of all duties.

Oversee the placement of work barricades, construction warning signs, and traffic cones; assist in flagging traffic around work sites.

Operates motor grader in grading and shaping streets, alleys, shoulders, and ditches.
-
Operates a track-type loader in excavating dirt for street maintenance and other repairs; loads dump trucks with street material or dirt for transportation to and from work sites.

Operates a bulldozer at landfill site to cover refuse with dirt; excavates dirt to open additional dumping sites.
-
Operates backhoe-loader in the construction and maintenance of water and wastewater lines and facilities.

Operates other equipment and performs other duties as assigned.

Other Important Responsibilities and Duties:

Maintain and document various records including equipment and supply inventory, employee attendance, overtime, and tardiness; prepare various reports as necessary.

Respond to service calls concerning street and drainage emergencies or problems on a stand-by basis; work to reduce state of emergency and correct problems; perform overtime duties as necessary or required in order to maintain proper functioning order.

Answer questions and provide information to the public regarding problems related to assigned area; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints.

May assist in gathering information regarding equipment and supplies for budgetary purposes.

Assists in the selection, performance evaluation, disciplinary process and training of maintenance crew personnel; assist in the purchasing of supplies.

Will work on-call and will respond to emergency call back as required by supervisor.

MUST be able to respond to emergency call back within 30 minutes or as needed by department.

Principles and procedures of record keeping.

Operation and maintenance requirements for trucks and heavy power-driven equipment. Work hazards and proper safety precautions.

Proper placement of warning signs and work barricades.

Pertinent Federal, State, and Local laws, codes, and regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Must be authorized to work in the United States
-
High school diploma or GED
-
Minimum 3 years’ of increasingly responsible experience in construction work or heavy equipment operation. Preferably utilities, street maintenance, or related field with responsibilities in the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.
License or Certificate:
-
Possession of an appropriate (CDL), valid Texas driver's license
When Assigned to Utilities Maintenance:
-
Possession of an appropriate and valid water and/or wastewater license (Collections II wastewater and class C water distribution license.)
